Zachary's Wish
Zachary and I had many talks on the 7th floor of the hospital. His exact quote was "Ann from this situation I want to find more compassion and help people". Find more compassion? Are you kidding??? I’m looking at him, bald, pasty skin, tubes coming in & out of him, thin, scars from so many surgeries, and he wants to find more compassion for his fellow human beings. Not only that, but help people??
It was a moment that I will never forget. I wanted to hit someone I was so mad and HE wanted to help someone. The kid was a superior life form—that’s all I can figure.
There was no question in Zachary’s mind that his purpose in life was to be used as a tool, as an instrument for good. Even as things were really becoming dire he never forgot that his life was about expenditure. His desire never waned—I want to help others.
I don’t know a lot but I know if someone asks me to help them help others, it’s wise to do that.
